Groton, Stonington awarded resilience grants

The New London Day 11/7/2025

Groton and Stonington have been awarded grants from the Long Island Sound Resilience Planning Support Program.

On Friday, the program which is a collaboration among New York Sea Grant, Connecticut Sea Grant, and the Long Island Sound Partnership, announced a total of $909,121 in grants for 14 resilience projects in Connecticut and New York.

Groton was awarded a $101,300 grant for a “comprehensive green infrastructure community engagement strategy” in downtown Mystic. SLR International Corporation is the contractor.

The outreach will focus on property owners in the 44 acres that drain into the Pearl Street stormwater system, according to a project description.

The intent of the report’s recommendations “will be to reduce the amount of stormwater flowing into Pearl Street by retaining it in the upper, largely residential watershed, while engaging private landowners in green infrastructure strategies and evaluating the potential for (best management practices) and a stormwater authority within the Mystic River watershed.”

“The support we have been receiving from the LIS Resilience Planning Support Program will help us bring forward community driven solutions for a historically flood-prone area in Mystic,” Sabit Nasir, sustainability and resilience manager for the Town of Groton, said in a statement.

Stonington was awarded $53,800 for planning help for a townwide Sustainability and Resilience Plan that “consolidates existing resilience projects, identifies data gaps through community engagement, and prioritizes projects for implementation.”

Stonington First Selectman Danielle Chesebrough said in statement that the town looks forward to working with contractor Resilient Land and Water LLC.

“This plan will help Stonington better understand current conditions and future risks related to sea level rise, severe storms, stormwater management, and tideland preservation,” she said. “It will also establish a clear framework for addressing these challenges.”
