2016 Sea Star Awards for Environmental Excellence
2016 Sea Star Awards for Environmental Excellence were presented to Elizabeth Herron and Linda Green of URI Watershed Watch for “decades of award-winning service to the environment and indispensable assistance to environmental organizations everywhere, especially CUSH.”
Awards were also presented to Steve Plant and Jim Markow and the Noank Aquaculture Co-OP for “fifteen years of effort to rebuild the local oyster fishery and through that process, supporting local efforts to improve water quality.”
Year Two of our Collaboration with the University of Connecticut
Dr. Julie Granger, Assistant Professor of Marine Sciences at UCONN, introduced the work of her fall semester class. This is the second year that students in Julie’s class have done field research at Wequetequock Cove and Little Narragansett Bay. Their work adds additional data to that collected by CUSH in the same areas. To fulfill their course requirements, the students must present their research to the public. This year, they prepared their findings on large posters which they brought to our annual meeting. CUSH members were able to discuss the study methods and findings with the students during the course of the evening. You can view the students’ posters at http://bit.ly/cushposters
SPECIAL THANKS!
Thank You to Charlie Buffum and Patrick Owen Boyle who hosted our annual meeting at Cottrell Brewery. Our gratitude as well to our volunteer oyster shuckers, Alan Bannister, Will MacKay and Sally McGee. Delicious, fresh local oysters were donated by Steve Plant of the Noank Aquaculture Co-Op.
