MISSION, OFFICERS & CONTACT INFORMATION

CUSH MISSION STATEMENT

CUSH - Clean Up Sound and Harbors - is the only non-profit environmental group in Southeastern Connecticut with a mission to clean up and protect Fishers Island Sound and its coves, inlets, bays, rivers, and harbors.

There are two primary objectives:  1) Identify sources of non-point pollution to restore a healthy aquatic environment through water testing; and 2) reduce pollution by changing resident's habits through an educational process.   In addition to these objectives, the group will provide rapid citizen feedback and work with local officials to improve harbor regulation and water quality management.

What are non-point sources of pollution?
Lawn, garden, and agricultural fertilizers, insecticides, and other chemicals
Boat effluent, grey water from cleaning, and petroleum products
Storm sewer runoff carrying debris and substances from streets
Home sewage contaminants from poorly maintained coastal septic systems
Hazardous materials - such as paints, solvents, oven cleaners, mercury
In light bulbs, batteries, etc. - that need special handling to avoid leaching from landfills into soils and the harbor
New construction substances washed into streams or storm drains
Hormones, medicines, and other things flushed by homeowners
that sewage treatment plants are not equipped to process
